Early life and influences

A. R. Rahman was born to a Tamil Hindu family.

His father R. K. Shekhar, was a composer and conductor for Malayalam films.

Rahman lost his father when he was 9 years old, and his family rented out musical equipment as a source of income.

He converted to Islam from Hinduism in 1989 along with his sisters.

During these formative years, Rahman served as a keyboard player and an arranger in bands such as "Roots", with childhood friend and percussionist Sivamani, John Anthony, Suresh Peters, JoJo and Raja.


Rahman is the founder of the Chennai-based rock group, "Nemesis Avenue". He played the keyboard and piano, the synthesizer, the harmonium and the guitar. His curiosity in the synthesizer, in particular increased because, he says, it was the “ideal combination of music and technology". He began early training in music under Master Dhanraj. At the age of 11, he joined, as a keyboardist, the troupe of Ilaiyaraaja, one of many composers to whom musical instruments belonging to Rahman's father were rented. Rahman later played in the orchestra of M. S. Viswanathan and Ramesh Naidu, accompanied Zakir Hussain, Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan and L. Shankar on world tours and obtained a scholarship to the Trinity College, Oxford, where he graduated with a degree in Western classical music




Personal Life:


He has three children, Khadijah, Rahima and Aman.

Rahman is related to the southern Indian actor Rashin Rahman.

Rahman is the uncle of the young composer G. V. Prakash Kumar

----First Oscar Award To An Indian----



A.R.Rahman becomes first Indian to win two Oscars

A.R.Rahman was announced winner of the
Best Score for Slumdog Millionaire &
Best Song for Jai Ho from the same film
at the 81st Academy Awards night held at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on the 22nd of February, 2009.
Rahman is the first Indian to win Oscar.
Slumdog Millionaire swept the Oscars and won 8 out of the 9 categories it was nominated in. Resul Pookutty and Gulzar were the other winners from India.

To say life is full of surprises is a cliche, but being in the midst of numerous other assignments, when the sudden call from Danny came through, it was truly unexpected. and to know that Danny has been closely listening to my work caught me by another big surprise… slumdog… the soundtrack is a result of the mutual admiration we have for each other and was a blast to work on. it was also great fun working with M.I.A. she brings great flavor and energy to the soundtrack. hope you have the same experience listening to it as we did whilst creating it…. as Salim in the last reel of the film states……

  • Aryan tribes from the northwest infiltrated onto the Indian subcontinent about 1500 B.C.;
  • their merger with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. The Maurya Empire of the 4th and 3rd centuries B.C. - which reached its zenith under ASHOKA - united much of South Asia. The Golden Age ushered in by the Gupta dynasty (4th to 6th centuries A.D.) saw a flowering of Indian science, art, and culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkic in the 12th were followed by those of European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Indian armed forces in the British army played a vital role in both World Wars. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU brought independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. India's nuclear weapons testing in 1998 caused Pakistan to conduct its own tests that same year. Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as significant overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife.
